Age: 25
World Information: About the best single wiki link I could find. Just scroll down to the 'Story' section for the relevant bits.
Lea will also be coming with CRAU experiences from Diatu. It takes place in a world called the Tenscore Kingdoms which occupy a continent roughly the size of Europe. Lea's experiences however were almost entirely within the floating city of Anastra and Diatu Magicademy, the school that the city was built around.
Personal History: Lea on the Kingdom Hearts Wiki and also Axel on the Kingdom Hearts Wiki because both are relevant.
After being unceremoniously hauled across time and space by the seat of his metaphorical pants, Lea ended up somewhere in the Tenscore Kingdoms, and was swiftly shipped off to Diatu Magicademy, like the rest of the 'Sundered'. While initially deeply resentful of being hauled away from his training to help prevent the end of his native world, he soon resigned himself to dealing with going 'back to school' for the duration until the people of that world could find a way to send them all home. Eventually though, as he made friends there and more friends from his own world arrived, he began to settle in, enjoying having a semblance of a normal life again, with no crisis hanging over him and no one trying to kill them. And miracle of miracles, he even found a class that he both liked and was good at; Forging, using things like metal and stone to make magically infused items. He even started working out a few of the tangled emotional issues he and his friends had- though the keyword there is 'started'- before he'd be pulled from Diatu to to his new trainbound life.
Personality:
Sarcastic/Snarky
Anyone who spends any amount of time with Lea (or had spent time with his Nobody, Axel) will know that this is his favorite kind of humor. The relative levels of acidity vs good-naturedness of his snarking tend to vary by the situation, but what's not always obvious are the emotions behind it. Having spent his formative years as a Nobody, Lea is often not certain how to deal with his emotions, and finds snarking a good go to method. Embarrassed? A self-deprecating one liner smooths things over. Scared? Add a bit of snarky bravado to cover it up and distract yourself. Angry? Aim sarcastic verbal barbs at your opponent instead of (or along with) more direct attacks.
He can be serious when he wants or needs to be, and will generally utilize sarcasm and snark less as he becomes more comfortable around someone. But until he reaches that comfort level, snark is a useful emotional defense mechanism.
Guilt
Lea feels very guilty not just for his past evil actions as Axel, but due to his own perceived ineffectiveness in the present. He wants very badly to be able to help his friends, to be a strong, reliable protector, but sees himself as failing at this again and again. Even those times he can't actively remember, he still feels deeply. This can lead him to try to overcompensate in one way or another, or otherwise make foolish decisions if he perceives his friends as being in jeopardy. This is made worse by his tendency to be...
Hot-headed
As the journal name and his hairdo imply, Lea is a bit of a hot head. This doesn't necessarily manifest as anger, but he's prone to making rash or impulsive decisions if left to his own devices. He generally needs a more level-headed person around to keep this tendency from getting him into too much trouble. He's not stupid,- far from it, in fact- but a number of of his moves can seem very foolish, and if someone could get him to actually stop and think about them a bit, he'd likely agree.
Kind
Underneath all the snark and fire, Lea's got a kind and caring heart. Parts of it came through as Axel, but now that he's fully himself again, it's a much stronger aspect of his personality. In fact, much of that snark and fire is meant to disguise his soft, marshmallow center and sweet, dorky side. He views that part of himself as being childish, and thus tries to act tough and cool to seem more adult, but more often than not, his sweet side finds a way to show itself despite his best efforts.
Protective
Lea has a tendency to- as his friend Isa once put it- 'pick up stray puppies'. That is, he's somewhat drawn to people who look like they need a helping hand, a friend, or just cheering up and tries to help them out. And with people he's already close to, he almost inevitably tries to take on a protective role, either physically, emotionally, or both.
Occasionally he can go a bit too far in this regard, and end up stepping on toes when his desire to protect his friends and his feelings as to what's best for them don't really line up with their wishes or become too restrictive. If said friend is willing to hold their ground and explain their point of view, however, Lea will usually back off. He nearly always means well; he just sometimes needs to be told to back off a bit.
Also, as stated above, Lea spent his formative years as a Nobody, and like the rest of the first Organization was fooled into believing that he had no heart. Thus, the years most people spend figuring themselves out, Lea remained largely emotionally stunted. As a result, he really has no clue about how to function as a responsible adult, hard as he may try to fake it. In particular, he's almost totally clueless about romance and is unlikely to recognize flirting or other romantic advances without help and will be extremely flustered if they're pointed out to him. Basically, think a dorky teenager in a man's body.
CRAU developments: As previously stated, while in Diatu, Lea started- if only a bit- to work out some of the massive, tangled emotional issues his life has left him with. He was able to admit to himself and to his old friend Isa that he really wasn't as OK mentally/emotionally as he seemed, and that getting to a point where he can say otherwise is going to take a long time and a lot of work, if it happens at all. He also admitted that he has no idea how to even begin such a healing process beyond taking things a day at a time and seeing what life brings him.
He also realized how much he missed having a normal-ish life. No crises hanging over him, Heartless to fight, or psychos trying to end the world; just homework, hanging out with his friends, and trying to make a little money here and there. He can still deal with all of the former, of course; he just found himself reluctant to go back to them once he realized he had the option. He also now knows the outcome of the battle against Master Xehanort, which was a big factor in this realization, since there was no longer a major sense of urgency to him getting home, and regained the magically locked away memories of his friend Xion.
Key themes: Honestly, probably the biggest themes in Lea's story are loss and redemption. From the moment Lea got involved with trying to rescue the mysterious girl from the castle basement back in Radiant Garden, his life has been a series of losses and struggles to redeem himself. He lost the girl he and Isa had become friends with. He was forced to watch his best friend Isa lose his heart moments before losing his own. As Axel, he joined the Organization with Siax- Isa's Nobody- to try and find the mysterious girl, but during his time there lost both more than ten years of his life and his remaining humanity to the Organization, becoming a cruel and amoral villain.Eventually, through his friends Xion and Roxas, he began to regain his humanity and ability to feel, only to lose both of them as well, with even his memories of Xion being magically sealed away. He also (seemingly) lost Siax as a result of his choice to try and protect Roxas and Xion. Axel then lost his life trying to protect Sora (and with him Roxas). He came back to himself as Lea only to have seemingly lost Isa AGAIN to the side of the new Organization. Then, in the final battle against Master Xehanort and his cohorts both sort of died temporarily (long story) and nearly actually died while facing off against Isa, Xion, and Xemnas while being mocked by Xemnas as an 'also ran'.
And somewhat since his time with Roxas and Xion in the Organization, but especially since his rebirth as Lea, he's been trying to redeem himself, both for his past villainous actions and his own failures both real and perceived. He went from someone who- at his most evil- coldly incinerated a man while he begged for mercy just to keep him from divulging information, to a Keyblade wielding hero and Guardian of Light, continues to try to make up for the things he's done and failed to do to this day, and likely will for the foreseeable future.
Main Motivation: Friendship. Pretty much every big decision and change- for good or bad- in his life has revolved around friendship somehow. Lea values his friends both old and new very dearly and would do just about anything to help or protect them.
Skills: Lea is skilled with Kingdom Hearts style fire magic, can passably do some of the type of magic he learned at Diatu, and is immune to direct damage by fire, magical or otherwise. He can also summon and dismiss his Keyblade- Flame Liberator- and his chakrams - the Eternal Flames- at will. He's a skilled fighter with both types of weapons and fire magic, though he has more experience with his chakrams. Keyblades have a number of abilities- which you can check out right here- but their signature ability is to be able to lock or unlock basically anything. (Obviously in game this will not include being able to unlock doors between worlds or the door to the engine room, likely to Lea's annoyance.) And Lea's chakrams seem to be controlled at least partly by his will rather than just by his hands, given the physics defying tricks he's been able to pull off using them.
In terms of non-combat skills, Lea's a pretty good cook when it comes to most things besides baking, and thanks to his time at Diatu, has gotten pretty good at Forging; that is, using traditional metalworking and similar techniques combined with magic to create magically imbued objects. Lea tended to focus on creating things like magically imbued jewelry and protective accessories, though he could probably expand to larger things- like weapons or armor- given the time, equipment, and materials. His forging skills could likely be applied to non-magical items as well, with a bit of practice, but again would require time, equipment, and materials to work with.
Item: An ice cream stick with the word 'WINNER' printed on it that was given to him by Roxas prior to the latter leaving the Organization.
Sample: A heart to heart with Isa.
Notes: Anything I end up stating about Lea's family life prior to losing his heart- what is parents were like, etc.- is pure headcanon on my part since no form of KH media has ever really touched on it, and given that we barely know that Sora's parents even exist, it's probably not going to happen for the foreseeable future. It's unlikely to really affect things in game much, but just figured I'd note it here.
